My name is Alisha, and this is my story.
I am 19 years old and I live in Franklin on a small hobby farm with my parents and younger brother. We have Chickens, Spencer the Guinea Pig, Max and Parker - our dogs and a Sheep called Frank.
I have lived in the valley since the age of three, we lived in Cradoc, Huonville, and Franklin over the past 16 years, I was born in South Australia, which is where my extended family is.
I love to learn, with a passion for science and am currently studying science at the University of Tasmania. I hope to one day work in the medical field as a physiotherapist or similar.
The question – ‘what makes me, me?’ – is difficult to answer without time to think about it, because everything that I do is a part of who I am, so I will tell you about my involvement with my community. I am a Scout Leader with my local group, and a Venturer before that. I really enjoy this role I play because I get to watch young people grow up into respectable young adults through their journey through the scouting movement, they become very different people from when they first start to when they move into the next section and I enjoy knowing that I was a part of their journey and perhaps made a slight positive impact on them in their lives. When I was a youth member, I struggled to get the support I needed and was told I wouldn’t achieve the award I wanted because it was a lot of effort on my leader’s behalf, but I strived on and am one of the few Huonville Venturers with the Queen’s Scout Award. My goal is to make sure all of my scouts feel as supported as possible through their Scouting experience and the award scheme.

I have been involved with the Huon Valley Theatre Company since 2011, I went along to a friend’s rehearsal to ‘Harriet James the Musical’ and joined up. I have been in 9 HVT shows and Back-staged 3. I have also been in 3 productions put on at Huonville High School and 1 at Rosny College.
I also volunteer my Saturdays at St Vincent De Pauls, I love working with the ladies and gents in the store, and they are all so welcoming, and always happy to see you.
I love to help people, this is my main aim in life, I want to be able to help everyone in a small way to make a positive impact, currently, I feel the easiest way to help people is my time – hence I’m involved with more than one organisation. I try to be involved with every opportunity I am presented with, in one way or another – of course not everything, because we all need a little time to ourselves. The perfect ‘Me time’ is curling up in a blanket, with a beautifully hot cup of tea and just thinking rather than doing.
In 2015, I received the Huon Valley Councils ‘Young Citizen of the Year’ for my involvement in the community through the Councils ‘Youth Advisory committee’, the theatre company and the scouting movement. Working with the people in the Huon, building relationships with them and just generally being in their company is a valuable experience and highly recommended, if you have time to spare, why not put it to good use and help out with an organisation like I do.
I love this community because of how accepting and understanding the people who are actively apart of it are. Whether or not you live here, you are welcome to give anything a go; it is a place of togetherness and beauty. The scenery in the south is fantastic and I convince a lot of my town based friends to come and visit for a day – just to enjoy what the Huon Valley has to offer.
